Is It Safe to Buy Auto Insurance Online?

By: Chris Robertson

Most people would agree the Internet has changed the way we live our lives. We can purchase clothing, pay our bills and watch movies, all while sitting at our computers. We can even compare and purchase auto insurance online, without ever meeting an agent. But is it safe? Here are three ways to make sure your online auto insurance transaction is safe and sensible.

Online Insurance Tip #1: Do Your Research!

It's one thing to get a great auto insurance quote; it's another to find an insurance company that's reputable. If you're using an online insurance comparison site, narrow down your search to three companies that offer you reasonable rates.

With those auto insurance quotes in hand, it's time to do some research. Use information from independent sites offering consumer experience ratings to compare your short list of possible insurers. How do the companies rate with consumers on issues like customer service and premium increases?

If you see a red flag, such as a low customer service rating, remove that company from your list of possibilities. It's not worth paying low premiums to deal with a company that's not focused on policyholders.

One more important consideration: are you comfortable working with your insurance company over the Internet, or do you prefer to work through the website of a company that also has local offices? Just a thought...and something worth pursuing if it's important to you.

Online Insurance Tip #2: All Coverage Isn't Equal!

Once you've narrowed down your search to one or two insurance companies, it's time to look over the coverage offered with a magnifying glass. This might seem excessive, but the time to find out specific situations aren't covered isn't when you're in the middle of one!

Again, using an online insurance comparison tool makes this step easy. Write down any questions you have. Here are some sample questions your comparison should answer:

Are the deductibles for all the policies the same?
What are the liability limits per person and per accident?
Is glass replacement covered under the same deductible?
How often are premiums reviewed?
How often will I be required to pay premiums?

Once you're satisfied you've found a company that offers great coverage at a reasonable price, it's time to take one more step.

Online Insurance Tip #3: Ask Questions!

Making assumptions about auto insurance coverage can be costly. If anything at all is confusing or unclear, call the customer service number for each company and ask them to clarify. This is also a great time to rate their customer service for yourself!

Auto insurance rates and policies are simple to compare online. Likewise, great insurance coverage can be obtained without ever leaving your computer. Do your homework, understand your coverage and be sure to ask questions. In that way, you can safely join the ranks of satisfied online auto insurance shoppers.
