Weather in NYC - What the Weather is Like in the Big Apple Throughout the Year

New York City is one of the world's most popular travel destinations. Whatever your reason is for visiting, you will want to be well prepared, and that means knowing what the weather will be like and what type of clothing you will need to pack. The weather in NYC can be more quite different due to the fact that much of it is surrounded by water. For the fall, if you visit from Sept 1-20, summer clothes should be fine, as you will still see temperatures of 70 to 80 degrees. Sept 21-Oct 10, bring a light jacket. After that you can expect the highs to only reach 50 to 70 degrees each day.

If you are going to be traveling to New York City in the winter months, be sure to pack so that you can dress in layers. Outside it will be both cold and wet, and snow or mixture of frozen precipitation will be seen often, but indoors, most places should keep things nice and toasty. Temperatures can vary from the single digits up to the 40's, but you will likely see them fall around 25 to 35 degrees. Add in the wind chill factor, and you are looking at subzero temperatures. If you do decide to face the weather in NYC during winter time, be sure to have a warm coat, hat, scarf, gloves, and an umbrella.

As for the spring time weather in NYC, the months of May and June are usually considered the best times to visit. You will not get the humidity you would see during the summertime, and the temperature should range from 50 to 80 degrees. There may be a day here or there that hits 90 degrees, but that is not very common. Shorts and short sleeves should be fine, with a light jacket just in case. A pair of pants and long sleeved shirt wouldn't hurt though.

For summer weather in NYC, especially July and August, it can make you feel pretty miserable. You will be hot and humid, with temperatures hitting somewhere between 70 and 95 degrees. You may run into a day or two that sees highs that go above 100 degrees, but for the most part, they should stay around the higher 80's. If you plan to use the subway, they are going to be about 20 degrees hotter than up on the streets. An umbrella should be taken for any potential downpours that might spring up, but otherwise, typically summer clothing should suffice.
