What Is Renewable Energy?

By: Dominic Donaldson

Renewable sources of energy become naturally replenished without the need for human intervention and since the concern for global warning becomes more severe, there have been many alternative energy sources explored. There are several ways in which sustainable forms of energy have been used to create renewable sources. Wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and bio fuel are all different forms of renewable energy, which produce energy that is clean and low in pollution.

Currently wind power is one of the biggest and fastest growing types of alternative energy that is used today. Since the start of mankind and primitive sailing boats, the wind has been used for its amazing power. For hundreds of years windmills have been used to help millers with milling and grinding. Today windmills are used in a different way; windmills are now connected to power collection systems. One country that has embraced this renewable energy source well is Denmark, which currently reports that around twenty percent of the country runs off wind power.

One other massive form of renewable energy is found in the sky, which is of course the sun. Solar power in recent years has become very popular and is often used in the form of solar panelling. Homes and large buildings are able to save money by using solar panels and to help places become greener. Solar power however still has quite a way to go before it can be completely harnessed. Scientists are looking to the future and even have plans regarding solar renewable energy possibly in space power stations.

Bio fuel is another renewable energy that is being explored; bio fuels include ethanol and biodiesel. Looking at a murky pond and the clumpy algae that gathers on the surface it is difficult to consider that substance running a vehicle. Yet algae biodiesel is a possibility for the future as one of the more modern solutions to renewable energy. The algae which is easy to grow in a laboratory or in lakes, offers a possible solution for depleting stocks of fossil fuels.

Another modern energy that is being used is bio thermal energy, as trapped heat from the earth is used to create power. Even homes for example, can be heated by bio thermal energy, which saves the homeowner money on heating bills in the long term and is good for the environment.

Finally, despite technology and research into renewable energy there are still many problems that will occur with the current fuel crisis. In order to be able to even create renewable sources we need pollution heavy fuels. But by relying more on renewable energy, humans do have a better chance of living in a green and clean future.
